Okanagan Waterwise Challenge2013 Contest Recap: As part of Canada Water Week in March, Okanagan WaterWise invited youth throughout the Okanagan to submit multi-media entries, telling us about a special experience they have had around water in the Okanagan and the importance of conserving and protecting it.

The winners were announced as part of B.C. Drinking Water Week, May 20 to 26, 2013.

Last year, entries came in from each part of the valley and included videos, songs, poetry and drawings.

2013 winners:

Uta Van Ziffle’s Grade 2 class from Vernon’s Mission Hill Elementary School who submitted a video entitled “We Love Our Water.”

Christine Richards’ Grade 2 class at South Rutland Elementary in Kelowna for their written and illustrated submission (31MB PDF).

Kari Wright’s Grade 3 French Immersion class at Glenmore Elementary for their written and illustrated submission (9MB PDF).

Both Van Ziffle’s and Richard’s class won a two-hour cruise on Okanagan Lake with their classes, thanks to Cruise Okanagan in Vernon and KelownaDinnerCruises.com.  Students headed out on a boat charter for an on-the-water classroom experience to learn about the water of the Okanagan.
Wright’s class won a pizza party, and the YMCA of Kelowna’s H2O Adventure and Fitness Centre helped provide pool passes.

Honourable mentions to Donna Tracy’s Grade 2 class from Giant's Head Elementary in Summerland for their video “20 Things We Can Do to Protect Our Lake”:

and a storyboard submission (10MB PDF) by Susan Brown’s Grade 2/3 class from Kelowna’s South Rutland Elementary.
